A child of the sea and life among the Mormons Elizabeth Whitney Williams Books

This is a book printed under the auspices of the Beaver Island Historical Society. The story begins in the 1800's and discusses a small island near the tip of lower Michigan (Beaver Island), and it's occupancy by the Mormons, especially actions by a delusional leader (James Jesse Strang) who called himself "The King".

The Great Lakes is a treacherous body of water even today, but then traveling by boat was always an adventure, throw in a religious madman and you have one great book. This book includes information regarding lighthouses, Mackinac Island, connections to ports in Ohio and New York.

The Island today has many of the same roads and the shipwrecks of the Great Lakes can be seen at Whitefish Point. The little Island where the story starts sits 7 miles across from our cottage and is owned by the Nature Conservancy and a working lighthouse is available for B and B through the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association.

A child of the sea and life among the Mormons Elizabeth Whitney Williams Books Reviews

Love this piece of Michigan history
Loved the author's personal accounts of that period of history. It was a fascinating glance back in time to the events on Beaver Island that occurred when Strang and his Mormons arrived.
My husband took me to Beaver Island,Michigan last fall, the location where this story took place. Our vacation rental had a nice little library section and that is where I found a copy of this book and I hurriedly read it during our vacation stay. This book tells a very interesting story! It was an eye opener to me so I wanted to have a copy of my own and share it with friends and family. I eventually ordered it through . The paperback copy that arrived has a nice cover but I couldn't believe it when I opened the book and saw that it was printed in this teeny tiny little print. One will need a BIG magnifying glass in order to read it, and I mean BIG!!! I've never seen a book written in such small print!!!! Unbelievable!!! Was the printer trying to save paper???? It will be a great effort to read because of the eye strain experienced from reading this edition. We don't need senior print, just average size print would be fine. A one star is a very generous review! This minuscule printed copy is a rip-off!
This is an interesting book. I will probably read it again.
Upper Michigan is now the vacation destination for Michiganders, but what was this part of the state like when it was being settled in the early 1800's? This book, in a very simple style, tells the story of one young girl and her family as they interacted with the Indian tribes and the new Morman community that established itself on Beaver Island. It describes the early fishing industry, the interdependency of the settlers, transportation by boat, and the early history of the big cities of Northern Michigan. If Upper Michigan is near and dear to you, you'll enjoy this book.
Published in 1905, A Child of the Sea is a memoir by Elizabeth Whitney Williams. It contains memories of her life on Mackinac Island, Menominee, Beaver Island, and elsewhere. It provides an especially critical view of the Strangite Mormon habitation of Beaver Island and nearby Charlevoix. While entertaining in its descriptions of wolf attacks, armed conflicts with Mormons, and interactions with local Indians, it is not entirely to be trusted as an honest chronicle of events. For most of the book, Ms. Williams was younger than a seven year-old and her memory cannot be completely trusted. No doubt, as with us all, she depended upon what she was told by others in building her understanding of the world. The book provides a glimpse into the raw world of mid-nineteenth century Northern Michigan, but its perspective must be balanced by views of others--in particular that of J. J. Strang in his Ancient and Modern Michilimackinac.
This is one young woman's story of her life in the 1800's. The struggles of island life on Mackinaw, and other islands in the area. So much rich history about the natives and how they had once occupied the islands for fishing then left no trace after leaving for winter. The Mormon story is dramatic and telling. Not so far off as the Jim Jones tragedy. If you're at all familiar with the islands and mainland northern Michigan you will enjoy this look into the history not widely known.
