I discovered Eric Ravilous and his paintings when reading Robert Macfarlane's incredible book, The Old Ways, about walking, exploring and internalizing ancient pathways (and waterways) in England and Scotland. Some of the walkways that are described in Macfarlane's book are located in the Sussex area. While I have never been to Sussex (I live in Sacramento and "Googled" images of Sussex) I believe that Ravilous beautifully captured the landscapes of the Chalk Downs and James Russell selected some of best works for this book. If you are a Ravilous fan, or a fan of Robert Macfarlane, or love walking thru the Downs on chalk pathways, i recommend this book to you.Product details

This book is full of wonderful Ravilious paintings of the Sussex Downs, where we often walk. It also contains some pictures of Furlongs, the cottage of Peggy Angus, where Ravilious and his wife often stayed. There are also some pictures of Asham concrete works. I believe this was the site of Asham House, where Virginia Woolf lived for a time until the concrete works took it over.
The Bloomsbury group's house at Charleston is part of the same estate as Furlongs. They are both just off the South Downs Way, though a mile or two apart on the different sides of Firle Beacon. Ravilious and Angus were friends from school and a generation younger than the Bloomsbury crowd, but they were both living on this estate from the 30's on.
There has been a revival of interest in Ravilious's work quite recently and this book is full of examples of his best work. If you are interested in Ravilious's work or if you love the South Downs, this book is a must buy.
